Elecampane root is a bitter warming aromatic for the respiratory system. It helps to clear congestion and supports the immune system. We chop the fresh harvested root and preserve it in honey. It is best stored in the refrigerator when temperatures rise above 80 degrees since natural fermentation can kick in over time.
HOW TO USE:
Use 1 heaping teaspoon per 1 cup of hot water.
Add this to a tea strainer or stir directly in the cup and the bits will fall to the bottom (chewing the bits gives you the inulin benefit which is a prebiotic for the gut). Steep this way for 3-5 minutes.
To make a batch of the tisane we have at market, use the ratio above (1 heaping teaspoon to 1 cup water) for a larger amount like 4 cups at a time. Simmer for 6-10 minutes with the lid on (not a crazy boil, but a little bubbly), then strain off the root. Have some hot and chill the rest in the fridge for later use.
The same tea method can be used to infuse a milk (just use a lower temperature to warm it) and then froth in to a latte.
If I have a tickle in my throat, usually at market when talking all day, I just chew on a few bits out of the jar.
To make a tincture, combine the entire jar with 2 cups of vodka or brandy (ball jars work great). Let sit for 2 weeks, shaking daily. Then strain off the liquid and take in dropper amounts or make hot toddies:).
